SINGAPORE ARTS FESTIVAL 2005Bang on a Can All-Stars(USA)
From 09 Jun 2005 (Thu), 8.00 PM to 10 Jun 2005 (Fri), 8.00 PM
Standard - S$50, S$40(20% discount student)

Bang on a Can All-Stars (USA)Raucous All-Stars bang out highly charged shows of energy and magnetism that draw from the worlds of classical music, rock, jazz and world music. Part classical ensemble, part rock band, part jazz band, this six-piece New York-based group’s diverse instrumentation - bass, percussion, keyboards, electric guitar, cello and clarinet – redefines contemporary music. Packing the power and punch of a rock band, the precision and clarity of a chamber ensemble, and the improvisatory flair of jazz, Bang on a Can All-Stars will show why they are hard to beat! Borne out of the vision of three composers and artistic directors Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe, Bang on a Can All-Stars was formed to explore diverse styles. The group comprises six accomplished performers, including percussionist David Cossin, last seen in the 2002 Singapore Arts Festival’s performance of Tan Dun’s Water Concerto. Whether performing the music of minimalist masters such as Philip Glass and Steve Reich or a new generation of composers like Tan Dun, this unstoppable and sexy ensemble plays with intensity, authority and abandon to give you a taste of their intoxicating brew. “Bang on a Can All-Stars presents new music the way it should be presented – with passion, precision, dynamism, stylistic authority and a welcoming informality.” – Newsday, USA “… one of the most captivating and forward-thinking modern classical/new music ensembles in the country…imagine the most real and vivacious avant-garde classical/rock music” Village Voice, USA “Radical … demands to be heard” The Guardian, UK

SINGAPORE ARTS FESTIVAL 2005The Gogmagogs (UK)Gumbo Jumbo
From 17 Jun 2005 (Fri), 8.00 PM to 19 Jun 2005 (Sun), 8.00 PM
Standard - S$40, S$30, S$20(20% discount student)

Gumbo JumboThe Gogmagogs (UK)Like the classical Cajun stew it’s named after, Gumbo Jumbo is extremely spicy and delicious, an exhilarating collage of ten musical pieces fused with inventive theatre and physical movement.Founded in 1995 by theatre director Lucy Bailey, this classically trained string ensemble releases the physical expression of the classical musician. Devised by seven young string players, The Gogmagogs explore different ways, from poetic to the absurd, of involving the whole body and personality of the player. On stage, music stands have been tossed aside and in its place are musicians fiddling in the dark, running and dancing with their instruments. Specially commissioned compositions, costumes and choreography create a humorous kaleidoscope of musical styles and theatrical wit. Lucy Bailey is renowned in Britain for her outstanding productions in theatre, music theatre, and opera. The musicians are stunning virtuosic performers, each bringing an energy, humour and irresistible charm to works ranging from Malagasy dance rhythms to Arabic modes of improvisation, to contemporary western classical to big band blues. A carnival of comedy, tragedy and poetry! “exceptional artists… the most entertaining music theatre I’ve seen in years” The Independent, UK “an astonishing virtuosic show that has pushed back the boundaries of classical music” The Guardian, UK “Music-making as a physical act both boisterous and joyful” Globe and Mail, Toronto

Chamber Orchestra ‘Moscow Virtuosi’ (Russia)Artistic Director and Chief Conductor - Vladimir Spivakov Moscow Virtuosi is one of the most exquisite chamber orchestras in the world led by eminent violinist and conductor Vladimir Spivakov. Founded in 1979 with a group of top-ranking soloists and concert masters from the best of Moscow’s chamber and symphonic orchestras, Spivakov has built a reputation for the highest performance standard from the moment of the ensemble’s birth. What makes Moscow Virtuosi so different from many other chamber orchestras is the bright individuality of each musician, its flair for subtle nuances and its own performance style honed by building a huge repertoire from Bach to Shnitke. Winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition and the Paganini Competition, Spivakov’s brilliance on the violin shines in a programme that includes Bach and Vivaldi concertos. “First rate string players honed by Vladimir Spivakov to a rare fitness of ensemble…” – New York Times “An amazing ensemble… with a fiery temperament and a remarkable mastery of their instruments.” – Wiener Zeitung, Austria Programme 22 June 110 mins (with intermission)
